Cornwall Vs Spain

The title may seem like a strange football match, but what it really mean is, would you rather stay in Great Britain this summer and enjoy the Cornish delicacies or visit Spain, relax on the beach sipping on sangria whilst the waves lap at your feet.

Both destinations have their plus points. With the all the news of the dwindling pound against the Euro, many Brits are opting to stay at home this year but is this really to a financial benefit or is it a deficit which could cost you your enjoyment too.

Well, life is what you make it, isn't this what you are told when you are growing up? You have to make your own fun. Let's take Cornwall, a beautiful county which forms the tip of the south-western peninsula of Great Britain. Weather may not be a guarantee, but then you can go abroad and be faced with a sudden down pour. Usually when abroad you are stuck in a complex that rarely caters for these moments, the outdoor pool doesn't look as tempting from your balcony, also there is only so many games of table tennis you can play in the downstairs bar, listening to the Macarena whilst there are kids at despair running around screaming with their duck float around their waists. Maybe that sounds like heaven, you are away from work, you love table tennis and the Macarena takes you back to your youth. Maybe this scenario is a little far fetched, rain in Spain isn't a common occurrence, but most of us have been abroad and had have been faced with the prospect of staying in the hotel until the clouds blow over for the sun to appear.

Back to the topic, a family of four, let's call them the Jones's. The Jones's are looking to go away this year, money isn't growing on trees but they have a stable income which allows them to enjoy the good life. Option A, could be a rented Villa in Majorca for 2 weeks, with their own swimming pool, Option B, for the same length of time is a cottage in Cornwall.

Majorca

Majorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands; it lies just off the coast of eastern Spain. The journey time is around 2 ½ hours from England.

A villa for 2 weeks, in one that has been reviewed as "ideal for families" will set you back around £1500 per week including car hire. The villa is in Pollensa which is around 1 ½ hours drive from the airport. Total so far is around £3000.

Then you have flights, car parking and also now a lot of chartered flights charge an additional fee to check in hold luggage. The family live in Birmingham, the nearest airport is East Midlands which is around an hour away. To tie in with the villa handover days they have to leave on a Saturday, so a peak day in peak season. Prices are based on Easy Jet, who also offers their own travel insurance, which on this case has been accepted. It is recommended to shop around with cover, as there are cheaper deals to be had. The total travel has come to around £730. The cheapest time was at 6.30am and on the way back there was only one flight at the more respectable time of 10.30. It is advisable to be at check in 2 hours before departure, the family live an hour away so would have to leave the house at 3 to give plenty of time to get to the airport. Their children are 3 and 6, thus equalling 2 tired children at the start of the holiday.

So far you have spent nearly £4000 on a holiday for 2 weeks, with no activities planned.

Getting around will cost about 90p a litre, you may not be doing a lot of driving but you have to get from the airport and back, maybe a few journeys here and there throughout the holiday. This could be around a further £50-£100 on your budget.

Day trips aren't cheap, in Magaluf which is an hour's drive from Pollensa, there is a water park which offers a wide range of activities not all water based, children 3 and under go free but even this will set the Jones's back £40 for the day.

Also there is the matter of eating out, comparable to England the average meal will be around £40 for a family of 4, including drinks. When you are staying in self catering accommodation it is likely you won't eat out every day and opt to eat in, especially with children, it's often more convenient and less hassle.

Day to day costs have now amounted to hundreds of pounds on top of a holiday that has already cost you £4000. Not to forget the early morning travelling!

Cornwall

The guide to Majorca was financially based, but as mentioned before both have their appeal. The cost of a cottage in the first two weeks of August will be around £1800. Like in the example above, the handover days are Saturday, usually check in would be around 11am but is not set in stone.

Travelling from Birmingham to Cornwall and back in a family saloon would be around £100 and should take about 3 hours traffic permitting. There is also the cost of travelling around so maybe this would be an additional £100. Travelling around and accommodation is already £1000 cheaper.

Cornwall has so many activities come rain or shine. There are so many outstanding beaches to choose from when the sun is shining. The Eden Project has many child friendly activities which are undercover for the gloomy days and with the tropical climate under the biospheres you could be Spain!

There is also the popular tourist attraction of Flambards, which has a variety of rides and provides entertainment throughout the peak seasons.

Both activities mentioned will cost around £40 each.

There is also eating out, again you should expect to pay anything around £40, seems to be the bench mark for most things.

Conclusion

The possibility of wall to wall sunshine could be the make in the Majorcan holiday but the cost could be the break. The basis of this article was to see whether the same holiday in Britain was cheaper than the foreign counterpart so excuse the lack of wish you were here selling technique.

A holiday in Majorca for 2 weeks will set you back around £4500, whilst a holiday at home without the early morning start will cost you around £2000 less, which could mean an extra sneaky holiday at another time during the year, surely that is a selling point in its self.
